Hotel vs. Motel

It seems as if some people have the hard time distinguishing between a hotel and motel.  They are NOT the same!  It's one of my pet peeves and I cannot stand people referring to hotels as motels.  No I did not stay at a motel on my wedding night.  jeez.
Lesson 1: The qualities of a hotel:
  • Interior hallways!!!  (this is key)
  • Elevators
  • A lobby
  • Restaurant or free breakfast area
Lesson 2: The qualities of a motel:
  • Exterior hallways
  • outside staircases to get to upper floors
  • parking outside your room
  • The ability to rent the rooms by the hour.
The Saint Paul Hotel
This is a hotel: notice the lack of exterior hallways and stairwells.  It has more than 2 floors and probably has carpet, a lobby, fitness center, restaurant and internet.  It doesn't advertise that it has cable/HBO.

These are Motels.  Notice the parking right outside the door, 2 floors, lack of elevators, outside Coke machine.

Okay QUIZ: What are these?

??

hmmm....

If you are still deluded into thinking these are motels please refer back to lesson 1.
